Sparrow Students Soar at Milo McIver State Park

Last week, our Marylhurst Sparrow (K–1) community packed their backpacks, laced up their hiking boots, and set off on a sun-soaked overnight adventure to Milo McIver State Park. It was a joyful journey from start to finish.

Surrounded by tall trees and clear skies, our students stepped into the natural world with curiosity, courage, and a sense of wonder. The trip offered countless memorable moments, from touring the Clackamas Fish Hatchery and learning about native fish populations to hiking winding trails, scouting for wildlife, and soaking in the sights and sounds of the forest.

As evening settled in, the campfire became a gathering place filled with stories, laughter, and connection. It was a time to enjoy each other’s company and the warmth of friendship.

Throughout the trip, students explored more than just the outdoors. Through mindfulness practices, journaling, and quiet observation, they tapped into their creativity and deepened their relationship with the natural world. There was space to roam, time to imagine, and opportunities to discover—all essential elements of learning at Marylhurst.

This overnight camping experience was more than a change of scenery. It was a chance to live out our school’s values of exploration, community, and care. Our Sparrows returned with full hearts, fresh insights, and an even stronger bond as a learning community.

A heartfelt thank you to our teachers, parent volunteers, and enthusiastic students for making this adventure so meaningful. Here’s to more journeys that connect us with nature, with one another, and with the joy of discovery.
