Literacy Week & Read-a-thon

April 13-17, 2026

Celebrating Literacy Week

Literacy Week is one of The Marylhurst School’s most beloved traditions, and this year’s celebration, held April 13–17, was filled with joy, creativity, and a shared love of reading and writing. Throughout the week, students engaged with stories in many forms, reflecting the important role literacy plays in their daily lives.

At the heart of the week is the Read-a-thon, a favorite event that brings our community together in support of classroom libraries. This year, students reached out to parents, friends, neighbors, and extended family members, and even found a few creative ways to participate (a pet cat!), and even gave themselves, all in support of growing their classroom collections.

The Read-a-thon supports a restricted fund that allows teachers to add new books to their libraries, expanding well-loved favorites while also introducing a wider range of voices and perspectives.

Thanks to the enthusiasm of our students and the generosity of our community, 94 gifts were made, raising $5,583. Two classes, Ravens East and Meadowlarks East, achieved 100% participation and will celebrate with a special class gathering in the pavilion, complete with treats provided by Suzanne.

We are so grateful to our students for their effort and excitement, and to our donors for helping place meaningful stories into the hands of our learners.
