One Week In: Summer at Marylhurst Is Off to a Fantastic Start

We’ve just wrapped up our first week of summer camps at The Marylhurst School, and it’s safe to say we’re off and running! The campus has been buzzing with energy, creativity, and the joyful noise of campers making, exploring, and wondering.

In Super Scientists, rockets launched, volcanoes erupted, and young scientists asked big questions about how the world works. Over in The Garage—our brand-new ceramics studio—campers got their hands dirty turning inspiration from the natural world into clay creations. The week concluded with a gallery exhibition, where the artists showcased their designs, shared their artist statements, and invited families to experience their craft. In Dungeons & Dragons, each camper created their own character, complete with backstory and a hand-drawn portrait, and even designed their own custom dice-rolling devices to use in gameplay. They then launched into two thrilling, collaborative campaigns. In Whispers from Wonder Falls, five unlikely friends set off on a kingdom-spanning mission to uncover which prince was trying to sabotage a royal wedding. Meanwhile, in The Teachings of GarGar, a group of glory-seeking fighters trained under the legendary GarGar, Son of Gar, and found themselves unraveling a criminal plot threatening their beloved coach.

This week, we welcome a new round of campers for three fresh experiences:

Dance Around the World – Campers will move to the rhythm as they explore global dance styles, learning the basics of ballet, ballroom, K-pop, and line dance while discovering the music and traditions behind each. The week wraps up with a World Dance Showcase, where campers share their favorite moves with family and friends.

The Culinary Art Institute of Marylhurst – Budding chefs will spend the week building kitchen skills from the ground up. They'll start with knife techniques and basic cooking methods before moving on to sauces, soups, and breads. Midweek is all about baking. Think cakes, cookies, and biscuits. Campers finish the week planning, preparing, and serving a Family Meal that showcases everything they’ve learned (and cooked!).

Under the Sea – Young ocean explorers will immerse themselves in marine science and storytelling, crafting sea creature art, investigating ocean habitats, spending time on our very own sandy beach, and celebrating the mysteries of life underwater.

With each new week, we’re reminded of what makes summer at Marylhurst so special: hands-on learning, joyful exploration, and a community that believes in each child’s ability to learn, express themselves, and take on meaningful challenges..
