K-Pop Dance: Building Community and Cultural Understanding Through Movement
Throughout this school year, Marylhurst students had the opportunity to explore culture, movement, and music through our K-Pop Dance Elective. With one class for students in grades 2–5 and another for students in grades 5–8, dancers brought a wide range of experience levels and personal styles to the program.
Students learned choreography, explored the history of K-Pop and learned about South Korean culture. They examined how cultural influences shape the music, performance styles, and dance traditions associated with the genre. By connecting movement to a broader cultural context, students developed a deeper appreciation for the art form.
The dances students learned combined elements of official K-Pop choreography with simplified foundational steps designed to build dance proficiency and confidence. As students practiced, they developed coordination, body awareness, perseverance, and the ability to learn and refine complex skills over time.
Most importantly, students built a supportive and encouraging community. They worked together to master challenging movements, celebrated one another's progress, and created a space where it felt safe to take risks, be vulnerable, and try something new. They also learned that growth often comes through practice, persistence, and a willingness to step outside their comfort zones.
The year culminated in a series of performances, including showcases for families and a special performance for the student body during Community Meeting. These opportunities allowed students to share their hard work by performing in front of an audience, and experience the pride that comes from accomplishing something together.
