Beehive Does Bauhaus

At The Marylhurst School, learning doesn’t end when the school day does. In Beehive, our aftercare program for preschool and prekindergarten students, children continue to explore and make meaning through thoughtfully designed experiences. Recently, that exploration has taken an artistic turn with Beehive Does Bauhaus.

The Bauhaus movement, known for its use of simple shapes, bold primary colors, and a connection between art and everyday design, offered a perfect entry point for our youngest learners. These are concepts that children are already beginning to understand, circles, squares, triangles, red, blue, yellow, and Beehive invited them to explore these familiar ideas in new and creative ways.

Through designing and arranging, students experimented with how shapes come together to form patterns. They explored how color can change a composition and how simple elements can create something entirely new. Just as importantly, they began to notice these same shapes and designs in the world around them on buildings, in objects, and in the spaces they move through each day.

This kind of work goes far beyond art. It supports problem-solving, spatial awareness, and imaginative thinking, while giving children the freedom to explore and express their ideas.

Programs like Beehive reflect our belief that aftercare can be a meaningful extension of the school day. With intention and care, it becomes a space where children continue to grow and discover.
